News

1. Benedictine U to Celebrate 3 Years for the Environment
Benedictine University (IL) has announced plans to launch a three-year program entitled, "Years for the Environment," aimed at moving the campus from education and conversation into action. The effort will incorporate curriculum, speakers, events and community outreach. An array of environmentally-themed courses will be offered each semester. Many existing courses, particularly those in biology, humanities, religious studies and anthropology, will incorporate environmental topics into their curriculum. These courses would lead to a Certificate of Achievement in Environmental Studies. Additionally, some events such as an environmental summit, a “Faith and Reason” series and a campus-wide reading will be integrated into the program on an annual basis. A major speaker, student presentations and other activities will cap off each year, followed by assessment of the previous year’s accomplishments. The program will start in the fall of 2008.

2. CU Boulder Launches Zero-Waste Program for Football Games
The University of Colorado at Boulder has announced the "Ralphie's Green Stampede" zero-waste and carbon-reduction program at Folsom Field, the University's football stadium. The goal is to move toward zero-waste at Folsom Field during the football season and invest in local carbon-reduction projects to match energy used to power the stadium, for team travel, and other football-related energy use. CU hopes to recycle or compost at least 90 percent of the waste generated at Folsom Field this year. According to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Folsom Field will become the first major sports stadium in the nation, professional or collegiate, to collect all materials in recycling or compost containers, eliminate trash cans and transform its materials collections systems into a zero-waste process.

3. Colorado State U Pueblo to Install Solar Array
Colorado State University-Pueblo has announced plans to install a more than one MW solar electric system. The system is estimated to contribute more than 10 percent of the University’s electricity needs. Installation of the ground-based solar array will begin in July with full operation scheduled for late this fall. The University will purchase the electricity generated by the solar array from BP Solar, who will install and operate the system.

4. Kennesaw State U Appoints Director of Sustainability
Kennesaw State University (GA) has named Robert C. Paul‚ professor of biology in the College of Science and Mathematics‚ as the institution’s first director of sustainability. In his new role‚ Paul will oversee environmentally sustainable operational and educational initiatives. Paul assumed his new role on Aug. 1. The position is part of Kennesaw State’s overall efforts to lessen its environmental footprint and educate its students‚ faculty and staff about environmental responsibility and sustainability.

5. U Southern Mississippi Hires Sustainability Officer
The University of Southern Mississippi has hired Larry Lee as Sustainability Officer. Lee will be responsible for establishing the University's new Office of Sustainability, which will focus on recycling, operations, and education. Lee will also focus efforts on an educational component called EcoEagle, with the goal of incorporating educational elements into the curriculum as well as implementing other activities for students and employees.

6. Dickinson College Hires Sustainability Director
Dickinson College has named Neil A. Leary as the first director of its new Center for Environmental and Sustainability Education. Previous positions held by Leary include head of the Technical Support Unit of Working Group II of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, senior economist in the Office of Policy of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and assistant professor at Middlebury College, where he also served as acting director of the Environmental Studies Program. Leary holds master and doctoral degrees in economics from the University of Washington and a B.A. from Macalester College.

7. Drew U Hires First Sustainability Coordinator
Drew University (NJ) has hired Christina Notas as the school's first Campus Sustainability Coordinator. Notas will be responsible for spearheading the university’s green initiatives and fostering a culture of environmentalism among students, faculty and staff. Notas, who holds a Bachelor of Science degree in environmental studies, is a recent graduate of the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry and an alumna of the New Jersey Governor’s School on the Environment.

8. 17 Schools Selected to Participate in EcoCAR Competition
The U.S. Department of Energy, General Motors and Natural Resources Canada has announced the 17 teams selected to participate in EcoCAR: The NeXt Challenge, a collegiate vehicle engineering competition set to begin in the Fall of 2008. EcoCAR will challenge university engineering students across North America to reengineer a Saturn VUE to achieve improved fuel economy and reduced greenhouse gas emissions, while retaining the vehicle’s performance and consumer appeal. Participating schools include Embry Riddle Aeronautical University (FL), Georgia Tech, Howard University (DC), Michigan Technological University, Mississippi State University, Missouri University of Science and Technology, North Carolina State University, Ohio State University, Pennsylvania State University, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (IN), Texas Tech University, University of Ontario Institute of Technology, University of Victoria, University of Waterloo, University of Wisconsin, Virginia Tech, and West Virginia University.

9. UC San Diego Increases Green Curriculum
The University of California San Diego has announced plans to offer more than 80 green seminars, workshops and courses that cover sustainability issues this fall. Course topics will include global warming, consumerism, alternative energy, climate change and society, and corporate social responsibility. Nearly 200 courses with sustainability related content will be offered in total.

10. Rockhurst U Purchases Green Computers
Rockhurst University (MO) has purchased 230 new computer workstations that are expected to last twice as long as PCs and will use 90 percent less energy than traditional desktops. The new computers, which are about the size of a VHS tape, will produce less heat, cutting down on air conditioning and electricity costs. The system calls for moving the software and storage from each individual computer to five powerful servers located in the campus data center. The Virtual Desktop Infrastructure will speed processing times, provide instant desktop recovery and lessen the time spent on upgrades and repair. Once the system is fully implemented, Rockhurst plans to donate more than 200 CPUs to local nonprofit organizations.

11. Syracuse U Develops Carpooling Incentives
Syracuse University (NY) Parking and Transit Services has developed a new carpool program that provides parking for two or more University employees who commute to work together. To participate in the plan, all members of a carpool register their vehicles under one multi-vehicle permit, which will provide campus parking for one vehicle; the hanging permit is then transferred between the carpooling vehicles.

12. Michigan Tech Launches Ride Share Program
Michigan Technological University has launched an Online Rideboard. The new electronic ride-share program allows students, faculty, and staff to access an interactive map and find a ride or rider leaving Michigan Tech.

13. 13 New Campuses Sign Presidents' Climate Commitment
13 new institutions have signed the American College & University Presidents Climate Commitment since the last update in AASHE Bulletin. In doing so, these campuses have committed to develop comprehensive plans for achieving climate neutrality. The new signatories are: E. Gordon Gee of Ohio State University, Barbara Snyder of Case Western Reserve University (OH), Bob Kerrey of The New School (NY), David B. Ashley of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, James R. Ramsey of the University of Louisville (KY), Steven G. Poskanzer of the State University of New York at New Paltz, Joseph L. Kennedy of the State University of New York at Canton, Dennis Dease of the University of St. Thomas (MN), Oscar C. Page of Austin College (TX), John W. Byrd of Simpson College (IA), Michael Alexander of Lasell College (MA), Gary Tollefson of Skagit Valley College (WA), and Judith Cardenas of Lansing Community College (MI). 565 college and university presidents and chancellors have now signed the Commitment.

14. Pacific U Building Receives LEED Gold
Pacific University's (OR) Berglund Hall has received LEED Gold certification. Berglund Hall is the third building on campus to have received a LEED Gold rating. The new $12 million building is home to the College of Education.

15. Harford Community College Building Receives LEED Silver
Harford Community College’s (MD) renovation of Joppa Hall has achieved LEED Silver certification. As a result of the LEED principles used in the renovation, Joppa Hall has reduced its energy consumption by 30%. Green features include a storm water management system that removes pollutants from the building and parking lot runoff; three green roofs; secure bike storage and changing/shower facilities; and designated carpool parking spaces. Additionally, 75 percent of the construction waste was recycled, healthy indoor air quality was carefully maintained during construction, and low VOC products were used.

16. The College of St. Joseph Installs Green Roof
The College of Mount St. Joseph (OH) has installed a green roof on its library. The roof features 8,880 plants that were obtained locally. The Library’s green roof is designed to reduce heating and cooling costs, extend the lifespan of the roof membrane, and decrease storm water runoff and pollutants into storm sewers.

17. Duke U Med Center Installs Green Roof
The Duke University (NC) has installed a green roof on its Medical Center entrance. The diamond-shaped patch of plants is a pilot project to help the University decide whether or not to install a green roof on the $596 million hospital expansion.

18. U Portland Renovates Outdoor Plaza With Recycled Materials
The University of Portland (OR) has completed a 2,500 square foot plaza renovation using recycled materials. The grounds of the plaza were resurfaced with rubber bricks made from 100 percent recycled tires, and picnic tables made from recycled milk jugs were purchased for the newly renovated space.

19. Georgian College to Build Sustainable Technologies Centre
Georgian College has received $6.5 million in funding from the Ontario government to complete upgrades on its Barrie campus. The funding will help the college build an 18,000 square-foot Centre for Sustainable Technologies, which will house new and existing construction and energy-related programming and skills training. Construction will begin by September and is expected to conclude prior to the fall 2009 semester. The Centre for Sustainable Technologies will create a total of 153 student workstations and include space for a Design Lab, High Voltage Electrical Lab, Surveying Lab, Materials Testing Lab, Industry-based Technical Reports Laboratory, Computer Lab and Innovative Technology Lab.

20. UNC Wilmington Installs LEDs
The University of North Carolina Wilmington has replaced 150-watt lighting pole bulbs with twin 48-watt LED energy efficient bulbs. Additionally, the new lights at Wagoner Hall feature 24-watt LED fixtures. Overall, the University expects savings in energy of more than 50 percent over the previous lights.

21. Boise State Named Best Workplace for Commuters
Boise State University (ID) has been named the "Best Workplace for Commuters" by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Transportation. The program recognizes institutions that value and support efforts to reduce traffic congestion, improve air quality and provide environmentally friendly commuting options to its employees and students. Notable programs that assisted in Boise State earning this recognition were the free bus and shuttle programs for students, faculty and staff; car pool programs; the Kinesiology Bike Barn that provides indoor bike storage, lockers and showers for bike commuters; and participation in and support of other programs offered through agencies such as the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality and the Clean Cities Coalition.

22. California Campuses Receive Sustainability Awards
Many University of California and California State University campuses have received recognition for their sustainability efforts in areas such as building retrofits and operations, green buildings, sustainable transportation and student sustainability programs at the Seventh Annual CSU/UC/Community College Sustainability Conference. The conference’s Best Practice Awards highlight successful and cost-effective projects on CSU and UC campuses that implement green building technologies, sustainable design strategies, and energy-efficient operations. Campuses that received awards include Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, UC Davis, CSU Channel Islands, UC Berkeley, Sonoma State University, UC San Diego, Fresno State University, CSU Monterey Bay, San Diego State University, CSU Chico, and Humboldt State University. Several Best Practices case studies have been posted online to showcase the award-winning projects.

23. Central College Receives Community Recycling Funding
Central College (IA) has been awarded $1,500 from the Marion County Community Foundation to promote a partnership with Pella Community Schools to purchase recycling bins for the 2008-09 school year. Central College is part of the Pella Community Schools' Green Team, a group of community members that help the school district to become more environmentally friendly. The recycling containers will be placed in various locations in district school buildings.

24. Brevard CC Receives Recycling Award
Brevard Community College's (FL) 25 member Green Team has received Keep Brevard Beautiful's annual Recycling Award. The team has recycled more than 35 tons of paper on campus since the program's launch in September 2007.

25. NWF Guide to Climate Action Planning
The National Wildlife Federation Campus Ecology Program has released a "Guide to Climate Action Planning." The guide addresses how colleges and universities can develop and implement plans to significantly reduce their greenhouse gas emissions quickly and cost effectively.

26. Campus Climate Neutrality Toolkit
GreenCityBlueLake has completed a campus climate neutrality toolkit that lists ideas on how to reduce greenhouse gas emissions at higher education institutions. The toolkit was created for students, faculty, and staff that are looking for ways to infuse curriculum and campus with lessons of sustainability.

27. New Issue of Sustainability: The Journal of Record
Mary Ann Liebert, Inc has released the August issue of Sustainability: The Journal of Record. This month's issue features an editorial by Nancy Cantor, chancellor of Syracuse University, articles on "Core Competencies for Sustainability Professionals" and "Sustainable Transportation Initiatives," and a profile of Butte College's sustainability efforts.

Opportunities

28. CFP: Climate Action Planning at US & Canadian Campuses
The International Journal of Sustainability in Higher Education (IJSHE) and the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) have announced a call for papers for a special issue of the Journal on climate action planning at campuses in the United States and Canada. Judy Walton, AASHE's Acting Executive Director, will guest edit this special issue. Submitted articles must be between 2,000 and 4,000 words in length. The closing date for submissions is August 29, 2008.

29. RFP: Project to Accelerate Campus Climate-Change Initiatives
The Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI) invites U.S. colleges and universities to submit proposal applications to participate in a research project to accelerate campus climate-change initiatives. The project is an opportunity for campuses to receive assistance with their climate action plans; generate climate solutions and innovative ideas with peer campuses, RMI, and AASHE; benefit from an RMI site visit; and obtain seed funding for implementation of high-potential greenhouse-gas emissions-reduction projects in campus operations. The project aims to develop a framework that campuses can consult for guidance in the planning and implementation of a successful climate-change-mitigation initiative that is targeted to campus operations; assist participating campuses in creating plans for tangible, whole-system actions to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions from campus operations; and connect participating campuses with potential funding partners. RMI will visit ten campuses selected from those offering proposals. The proposal deadline is September 3, 2008.

30. Champions of Sustainability in Communities Awards
The Sustainability Endowments Institute invites nominations for the Champion of Sustainability in Communities Award and the Sustainability Innovator Award. The Champion of Sustainability in Communities Award will be presented to a U.S. college or university with community partnerships that demonstrate the impact of collaboration in achieving sustainability goals. The Sustainability Innovator Award seeks to recognize a small group of highly innovative schools for their leadership in campus and/or endowment sustainability. Those selected will be recognized in the College Sustainability Report Card 2009 scheduled for release this fall. Nominations are due September 12, 2008.

31. The Real Food Challenge
The Real Food Challenge, a national campaign to redirect the $4 billion spent by colleges and universities on food each year to food that is healthy as well as local, ecologically sound, fair, and humane, invites participants for its Real Food Now! Month of Action. Students, faculty, and staff can submit their real food events on the Real Food Challenge website.

32. Become an AASHE 2008 Supporting Institution
In an effort to encourage strong student participation at its 2008 conference, AASHE is inviting colleges and universities to become Supporting Institutions. Supporting Institutions offer to cover the cost of participation in the conference for at least one of their students, and provide $250 to support the conference. In exchange, they will be recognized in the conference website, printed program, signage and other publicity materials.

33. Director, Office of Sustainability, Wayne State U
Wayne State University (MI) is seeking a Director of its Office of Sustainability to serve as a leader to help WSU successfully implement environmental sustainability efforts. The Director will also act as an in-house consultant for environmental concerns pertaining to the University utilities, energy management, recycling and facilities planning and construction, and s/he will serve as a campus spokesperson on sustainability issues with internal and external constituencies. Qualifications include a Bachelor's degree in environmental, chemical, civil, electrical or mechanical engineering and a proven understanding of environmental best practices for energy, building and recycling initiatives. A Master's degree is preferred. The position is open until filled.

34. Manager, Sustainability Programs, Pennsylvania State U
The Pennsylvania State University Office of the Physical Plant is seeking a manager for sustainability and environmental stewardship programs. The successful candidate will encourage, facilitate, and coordinate sustainability programs initiated by students, faculty, and staff; develop, plan, and present programs, seminars and workshops related to sustainability to Penn State, local, regional, and national audiences; assist in the development of long-range plans for sustainability at Penn State; and work with University departments and constituents to improve environmental stewardship across Penn State. A Master's degree or equivalent is required, plus three years of work-related experience. Resume review will begin September 1, 2008.

35. Associate Director, Sustainability, U New Mexico
The University of New Mexico seeks an Associate Director of Sustainability to be responsible for institution-wide sustainability. This position organizes and oversees the management and implementation of a comprehensive program with the mission to maintain and enhance environmental stewardship within the campus community, support new initiatives for sustainable development, and identify operational cost savings. A Bachelor's degree and at least 7 years of related experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified are required. LEED accreditation is preferred. The position is open until filled.

36. Assistant Director, Office of Sustainability, Yale U
Yale University is seeking an Assistant Director of the Office of Sustainability to support the day to day management of the office while providing leadership and vision to Yale’s sustainability goals and objectives. The successful candidate will be responsible for fostering strategic faculty, staff and student partnerships across the institution that lead to the implementation of sustainability best practices across campus. A Master's degree in a related field and four years of professional experience, or an equivalent combination of experience and education is required.

37. Assistant Director, Sustainability Partnerships, Yale U
Yale University seeks an Assistant Director of Sustainability Partnerships to manage and support Yale’s participation in various national and international sustainability networks. The successful candidate will also be responsible for organizing and hosting meetings and workshops that advance the objectives of the collaborations. A Bachelor’s Degree and three years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience are required. A graduate degree is preferred.

38. Assist Specialist, Sustainable Agrifood Systems, UC Santa Cruz
The University of California, Santa Cruz Center for Agroecology and Sustainable Agrifood Systems (CASFS) is accepting applications for a Sustainable Agrifood Systems Assistant Specialist. Under the general direction of the CASFS Assistant Director, the Assistant Specialist will coordinate the implementation of model education and public service efforts on sustainable agrifood systems on UC campuses and regionally. Funded through a one-year grant, the Assistant Specialist will participate in a project team to design and implement education strategies and programs in institutions of higher education beginning with UC campuses. Qualifications include a Bachelor's degree in relevant field and demonstrated ability to work effectively on a project team, work independently, and work on multiple projects simultaneously. 39. Assoc Specialist, Sustainable Agrifood Systems, UC Santa Cruz
The University of California, Santa Cruz Center for Agroecology and Sustainable Agrifood Systems (CASFS) is accepting applications for a Sustainable Agrifood Systems Associate Specialist. Under the general direction of the CASFS Director, the Associate Specialist will research and develop educational projects and materials on sustainable food systems, coordinate and edit a book, manage a campus-based agrifood seminar, oversee participatory research projects, help develop research collaborations, and participate in social science research and education development for the Center. Qualifications include a Ph.D. in sociology, geography, social anthropology, public health, or related social-science field; a strong record of academic research and scholarly publications in a social science discipline; and experience writing research proposals. 40. Director, Center for Environmental Policy, Bard College
The Bard College (NY) Center for Environmental Policy is seeking a Director who will provide dynamic intellectual and administrative leadership for the Center and its graduate program. The Center offers an M.S. degree and engages the community on regional, national, and international environmental policy issues. Responsibilities include fundraising and developing collaborations with regional environmental centers, NGOs, government agencies, and private sector firms. A Ph.D. or terminal degree and a distinguished record of scholarship is required.

41. Director, Environmental Studies, Wofford College
Wofford College (SC) seeks applicants for the position of Director of Environmental Studies. The director will coordinate the work of participating faculty members and chair the ES oversight committee. Ideal candidates will have experience in multidisciplinary work, published research, and demonstrated teaching effectiveness. A Ph.D. is required in an appropriate area of science such as biology, chemistry, physics, ecology, geology, forestry, or toxicology. Candidates must have a strong background in field-based work and commitment to utilizing our newly acquired green space and facilities. Deadline for application is November 1, 2008.

42. Chair, Climate Change and Conflict, U New Brunswick
The University of New Brunswick is pleased to announce the establishment of The Gregg Centre Chair in Climate Change and Conflict for Emerging Scholars, a new research position affiliated with The Brigadier Milton F. Gregg, VC, Centre for the Study of War and Society. UNB is looking for a dynamic and innovative young scholar to hold this new research Chair. The Gregg Centre encourages applications from recently completed PhDs who have already demonstrated excellent potential as scholars in the emerging field of climate change and conflict, and from those in any of a wide variety of related fields -- such as, but not restricted to, international relations, geography, anthropology, and climatology -- who want to focus on climate change and conflict. Review of applications will begin January 1, 2009, and a candidate will be appointed by July 1, 2009.

43. Distinguished Chair, Env't & Natural Resources, U Wyoming
The University of Wyoming invites applications and nominations for the newly created Wyoming Excellence/Spicer Distinguished Chair in Environment and Natural Resources. UW seeks an individual with an exceptional record of teaching and/or equivalent practitioner experience, public outreach and scholarship in environment and natural resources management and policy, with an emphasis on conflict resolution and collaborative processes. The successful applicant will be expected to establish a strong, funded research program, as well as teach at the graduate and undergraduate levels. The Chair will provide leadership and vision for interdisciplinary curricula at the graduate and undergraduate levels. An earned Ph.D. or another terminal degree is required. The review of applications will begin on October 1, 2008 and will continue until the position is filled.

45. Professor, Environmental Chemistry, Haverford College
Haverford College (PA) seeks to fill an open rank tenure-track position in environmental chemistry, broadly defined. Applicants from all areas of chemistry are encouraged to apply, but expertise should focus on topics related to the environment. The successful candidate will teach chemistry courses at all undergraduate levels and play a formative role in a new interdisciplinary program in Environmental Studies. A Ph.D. and postdoctoral experience are required. The application deadline is October 10, 2008.

46. Prof, Political Economy of Env'l Change, UC Santa Cruz
The University of California, Santa Cruz Department of Environmental Studies seeks a social scientist at the rank of Associate or full Professor in the Political Economy of Environmental Change in the Global South. Applicants should demonstrate excellence in teaching and research on the processes of, and responses to, environmental change in resource-based or agricultural communities. 47. 2 Assist Professors, Environmental Studies, U Illinois Springfield
The University of Illinois at Springfield Department of Environmental Studies seeks applications for two enure-track positions at the Assistant Professor level beginning on August 15, 2009. The Assistant Professor in Sustainable Development and Environmental Social Sciences will be able to teach environmental social sciences and humanities, sustainable development, environmental ethics, cultural ecology, environmental economics, and conduct research in her/his specialization. The Assistant Professor in Environmental Planning and Geographic Information Systems Laboratory Director will be able to teach environmental and land use planning, fundamental and advanced geographic information systems, and environmental physical geography, conduct research in her/his specialization, and manage the resources and research of the GIS laboratory. 48. Assist Prof, Environmental Studies, Mount Holyoke College
Mount Holyoke College (MA) invites applications for a tenure-track, entry-level position in environmental studies with a focus in political/social ecology. The successful candidate will be trained in social science and bring teaching and research strengths in the interconnections among bio-geophysical, political and social relationships, and their place in problems of sustainability, with an ability to engage issues in dialogue with ecological science, the humanities, and applied work or community projects. 49. Assist Prof, Human Dimensions of Env'l Change, U British Columbia
The University of British Columbia Institute for Resources, Environment and Sustainability invites applications for a tenure track position, at the rank of Assistant Professor, in the human dimensions of environmental change, to commence July 1, 2009. The successful candidate must have a completed PhD and have demonstrated potential in research and in teaching at graduate and undergraduate levels. The successful candidate will be expected to teach graduate courses in his/her area of specialization. Applications are due September 30, 2008.

Michigan State University seeks applicants for a Graduate Research Assistant in Sustainability Education Assessment. MSU has 3 years of support for a half time Graduate Research Assistant to study the effectiveness of the pedagogy and evaluate student learning outcomes. Ideal applicants will have a bachelor’s degree; coursework and experience with assessment of educational outcomes and portfolios; strong teamwork skills; expectation to actively participate in scholarly presentations and publications; experience with project design, data collection and analysis; comfort working with undergraduate students, faculty, staff, administrators and collaborators in the public and private sector.

51. Climate Change Program Coordinator, SustainUS
SustainUS is accepting applications for a Climate Program Coordinator to support the climate change-related activities of its Agents of Change program. The Coordinator will work with the Agents of Change Program Coordinators and other volunteer organizers to ensure that project goals are met. In December 2008, SustainUS will send an Agents of Change delegation to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) negotiations, Conference of the Parties (COP) in Poznań, Poland. The Climate Program Coordinator is responsible for the delegation's preparation including managing logistics, training, outreach, and collaboration with other groups. This is a one-year full time contract position, subject to a six-month evaluation of performance and the organization’s needs. Qualifications include relevant education, work, or volunteer experience in outreach, communications, grassroots organizing, or a related field. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis. The Coordinator will be expected to begin work by September 15th.

52. AASHE 2008 Conference
November 9 – 11, 2008; Raleigh,NC
AASHE will host its second biannual conference, AASHE 2008: Working Together for Sustainability – On Campus and Beyond. The conference will feature keynote speakers Lester Brown, Van Jones, Peter Senge, and Vandana Shiva; a sustainability career fair; pre-conference workshops; and a two-day tradeshow focused on promoting environmentally sustainable and socially responsible products and services. Students, administrators, faculty, staff, community members, and business representatives are encouraged to attend. The early registration deadline is August 29, 2008. Discounts are available for students and AASHE members.

53. Northeast Campus Sustainability Conference 2008
October 27-28, 2008; Princeton University; Princeton, NJ
Princeton University (NJ) will host the fifth annual Northeast Campus Sustainability Consortium (NECSC) Conference 2008. The theme this year, "The Sustainability Puzzle: Putting the Pieces Together", will look at the many interconnected and inter-disciplinary sustainability issues faced by campuses today. Areas to be explored include academics, operations, governance, and community. Emphasis will be placed on how to engage the often disconnected members of the campus community to pursue policies and practices that result in a smaller environmental footprint and a greater awareness as a community.

The U.S. Green Building Council will host its 2008 Greenbuild International Conference and Expo - Revolutionary Green: Innovations for Global Sustainability. USGBC’s Greenbuild conference and expo is an opportunity to connect with other green building peers, industry experts, and influential leaders as they share insights on the green building movement and its diverse specialties. Speakers include Archbishop Desmond Tutu, E.O. Wilson, and Janine Benyus. The conference will feature over 100 educational sessions, LEED workshops, off-site educational sessions. Students, universities, and professionals are invited to attend. The early registration deadline is September 8, 2008.

October 18-21, 2008; Austin, TX
The National Council for Workforce Education invites participants to attend its annual fall conference, "Green Community Colleges: Sustainable Campuses and Programs." Keynote speakers include Van Jones, Kay McClenney, Sharon Blackman, and Randall Kempner. Topics covered will include workforce curriculum and faculty development, going green – sustainability initiatives, breaking-through initiative, energy programs and opportunities, basic skills, and partnerships and international workforce education. Presidents, Vice Presidents, Deans, Faculty, and researches are encouraged to attend. The early registration deadline is September 21, 2008.
