News

1. U Penn to Offer Dual Degree in Business and Env'l Studies
The University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School and School of Arts and Sciences have launched a new program to enable participants to earn a dual master of business administration/master of environmental studies degree in three years or less. The program is intended to groom its participants for global leadership roles in environmental management, finance and other business specialties. The students will take business classes full-time for three semesters at Wharton and spend a year in SAS’s College of Liberal and Professional Studies, which oversees the environmental-studies portion.

2. Northern Illinois U Unveils Financial Aid Initiative
Northern Illinois University has unveiled the Huskie Advantage Program, a new initiative that provides gift aid to new freshmen entering the University in the fall of 2009. Any portion of tuition costs not covered by a combination of the Illinois Monetary Award Program (MAP) grant and the federal Pell grant will be covered by the new program. The University estimates that the program will help 900-1,000 new NIU students each year.

3. Texas A&M Announces Free Tuition for Low Income Freshmen
The Texas A&M University Board of Regents has approved a financial assistance plan that will provide gift aid to cover tuition and fees at all Texas A&M System academic campuses for admitted students whose families earn less than $30,000 annually. The University System Promise Program will begin with the fall 2009 semester.

4. Illinois Inst of Tech Announces Green Dorm Comparison Project
The Illinois Institute of Technology has announced plans to build two new identical residence halls. The only difference between the two buildings will be their green features. One facility will aim to achieve LEED Gold and the other will aim to achieve LEED Platinum. Both buildings will feature greenhouses, green roofs, and solar chimneys, but the LEED Platinum building will feature solar panels for hot water and electricity, wind turbines, geothermal heating and cooling, and a gray-water system, several real-time energy monitoring systems, and underground ducts which will help to moderate the temperature of indoor air. IIT officials plan to monitor the energy use of each building and use the data for a case study on green building. Construction is tentatively scheduled to begin in 2009.

5. Marywood U to Open School of Architecture Focused on Green Design
Marywood University (PA) has announced plans to open a new school of architecture that focus on sustainable design. The new school will offer three programs: a four-year Bachelor's of Environmental Design in Architecture; a five-year Bachelor's of Architecture; and a six-year Master's of Architecture, which requires two years of study after the completion of the pre-professional program. All students will be required to take courses that prepare them for the LEED Accredited Professional exam.

6. Clark U Announces Social Change Concentration for MBA Students
Clark University (MA) has announced a new concentration in Social Change that is available to MBA students. The concentration consists of courses in international development, community development, environmental policy, and social entrepreneurship.

7. Chandler-Gilbert CC Offers Sustainability Certificate Program
Chandler-Gilbert Community College (AZ) has introduced a new certificate program entitled, "Sustainability and Ecological Literacy." The program, which will be available in the spring 2009 semester, will include classes such as Environmental Ethics, The Economics of Natural Resources, Population and the Environment, Nature and Environmental Literature, and Environmental Biology. The program will focus on solving problems through experiential learning.

8. Mitchell Technical Inst to Offer Degree in Wind Turbine Technology
Mitchell Technical Institute (SD) has announced plans to offer a degree in Wind Turbine Technology. The program, which will start in the fall of 2009, will enable students to choose from a one-year technician diploma or a two-year degree.

9. Auburn U Establishes Office of Sustainability, Sustainability Minor
Auburn University (AL) has created a permanent Office of Sustainability. An Office of Sustainability has existed on the Auburn campus for the past four years under the name of the Sustainability Initiative, but the administration chose to make it permanent after signing the American College & University Presidents' Climate Commitment. Additionally, the AU has established a new minor in Sustainability Studies. The new interdisciplinary minor is available to students for the first time this fall.

10. Chatham U Names Sustainability Coordinator
Chatham University (PA) has named Mary Whitney as the University's first Sustainability Coordinator. Whitney will co-chair the President’s Climate Commitment Committee; analyze all current sustainability practices at the University; coordinate sustainability efforts at all Chatham campuses; and develop sustainability practices and activities with students, faculty, and staff at all campuses.

11. U Idaho Student Group Hires Sustainability Director
The Associated Students of the University of Idaho has named Garrett Lamm as its new Director of Sustainability. Lamm’s main interest and goal for his term is to reduce waste on campus. He wants to focus specifically on Greek Row and on tail-gate events.

12. UNLV Adopts Water Conservation Measures, Forms Sustainability Ctte
The University of Nevada Las Vegas has adopted a Drought Response Plan that lists ways of reducing water consumption campus-wide. The document acknowledges where water-run off occurs and seeks to convert turf to desert landscapes and install drip irrigation systems where desert landscape has been created. In addition, UNLV has created Urban 21, a group tasked with developing sustainability goals for the campus. Urban 21, which consist of UNLV faculty and staff, hopes to focus on energy resources, building heating and cooling, carpooling, and water conservation.

13. Santa Barbara City College Works to Integrate Sustainability Curricula
An Assistant Professor of Biology and the Campus Diversity Coordinator at Santa Barbara City College (CA) have started the "One Planet Faculty Fellows Program" which helps faculty to infuse sustainability into the curricula. Faculty members received $300 for attending the first program workshop, which 15 teachers attended. The program aims to provide students with the opportunity to learn about sustainability, diversity, and the threat of global warming. The program also hopes to create individual courses and majors in environmental sustainability.

14. St. Olaf College Dedicates Green Science Building
St. Olaf College (MN) has dedicated Regents Hall, a new green science building on campus. The 200,000 square-foot structure, which is registered for LEED Platinum certification, features a green roof, passive solar lighting, and building materials that contain recycled content.

15. Indiana U Creates Interactive Alternative Transportation Map
The Indiana University Task Force on Campus Sustainability has developed an interactive alternative transportation map, entitled "Bloomington by Bike and Bus," that will help commuters find more environmentally friendly ways to travel to and within the IU Bloomington campus. The map, built upon the Google Maps programming interface, allows individuals to view City of Bloomington on- and off-street marked bikeways, IU bike rack locations and rack types, and IU bus routes, while having the capability to turn each category on or off. In addition, a resources section beneath the map key provides links to other useful Web sites regarding alternative transportation within Bloomington and on the IU Bloomington campus. In response to the need for better bicycle maps displaying routes and bike parking facilities, an Informatics graduate student and Task Force summer fellow for 2008, constructed the website.

16. Napa Valley CC Installs 6 Hybrid Cooling Systems
Napa Valley Community College (CA) has installed six hybrid cooling systems at the school's Child Development Center. The new systems reduce the daytime power consumption of the facility and lower greenhouse gas emissions. The system uses ice-storage technology that shifts 95 percent of the on-peak electricity used for cooling to evening hours, when electricity from the power grid is cleaner, more efficient and less expensive to produce. The College expects the new installation to generate $5,100 in annual savings.

17. Confederation College to Install Biomass Plant, Green Roof
Confederation College (ON) has announced the Integrated Renewable Solutions project. The project features plans to install a gasified waste wood burning biomass plant, a solar thermal wall to help heat the water for the boiler, photovoltaic cells to generate solar power, windows to provide natural light, and a green roof. The College expects the project to be complete by June 2010.

18. EKU to Establish Ctr for Renewable Fuel Technologies
Eastern Kentucky University has announced plans to establish the EKU Center for Renewable and Alternative Fuel Technologies (CRAFT). The Center will provide researches with the opportunity to examine the potential for a cellulose-derived biodiesel industry in Kentucky. CRAFT will aim to identify and develop baseline agricultural and economics data. The work will include: the prioritization of agricultural crops that would make good feedstock for the production of bio-oils; the identification of land that could be cultivated without negatively impacting existing agricultural businesses; the determination of potential/probable crop yields; the identification of the economic impacts on the Commonwealth’s agricultural, transportation, and biofuels industries; and the determination of transition scenarios for moving toward a biofuel industry in the Commonwealth.

19. St. John's U Partners with EPA to Reduce its Env'l Impact
St. John's University (NY) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the US Environmental Protection Agency to reduce its environmental impacts by adopting sustainable practices and joining EPA partnership programs. The agreement includes goals to reduce the energy consumed by the school's buildings and plants by at least 10 percent, adopting water conservation and material re-use strategies guided by the EPA's GreenScapes landscaping program, and conducting an energy audit of the St. Albert Hall laboratory and reducing its energy needs through EPA’s Labs 21 program. St. John’s will report the progress on its goals to EPA every six months.

20. U Waterloo Signs MOU for Renewable Energy Research
The University of Waterloo (ON) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the University of Petroleum and Energy Studies in India and the Centennial Energy Institute in Canada to further enable research on renewable energy, nanotechnology, and nuclear engineering. The goal of the agreement is to improve energy security, reliability, and affordability. The partnership will allow for students and faculty from both institutions to collaborate.

21. Alfred State College Installs Solar Array
Alfred State College (NY) has installed a 5.1 KW photovoltaic grid intertie system on its Applied Technology Building. The system powers the campus library and administration building of the School of Applied Technology. The project was completed in part by students in the electrical construction and maintenance electrician program.

22. U California Santa Barbara Unveils Solar Array
The University of California, Santa Barbara has installed a rooftop solar array on the campus' recreation center. The University expects the $1.5 million solar project to reduce its energy costs by $100,000 annually. The bulk of the project’s cost, about $872,000, came from student fees that are allocated to the Recreation Center Governance Board.

23. Caltech Installs Solar Arrays
The California Institute of Technology has installed 2 of 9 planned solar arrays on its campus. Caltech has completed a solar array on the North Holliston Avenue parking garage and a student-designed and student-built array on the Watson Laboratory building. Once complete, the 9 arrays will provide 7 percent of the institution's energy needs by 2009.

24. GRCC Reduces Energy Use by 16.25% Through Energy Education Prgm
Grand Rapids Community College (MI) has reduced its energy use by 16.25 percent in the first five months of its Energy Education Program. The University believes that most of the program's success is due to having a trained Energy Manager on staff.

25. U New Hampshire Saves Energy with Reduction Campaign
The University of New Hampshire has announced that faculty, staff, and students saved approximately 192,000 kilowatt-hours of energy through the university’s fourth Student Energy Waste Watch Challenge and annual Thanksgiving “power down” initiative. The University saved $27,000 in energy costs as a result of both initiatives.

26. Iowa State U Adds 4 Electric Vehicles to its Fleet
Iowa State University has purchased four new electric vehicles to add to its fleet. ISU purchased the 4 vehicles, which travel up to 50 miles on one charge, from 3 different manufacturers in order to test each one.

27. Appalachian State U Powers Holiday Lights with Solar Energy
A group of Appalachian State University (NC) appropriate technology students have designed and installed a system that powers the lights on the Sustainable Energy Society's Christmas Tree with solar energy. The tree's lights are connected to a photovoltaic system that allows it to absorb solar energy all day and power the lights all night. As a result, the tree is completely off the grid.

28. U Phoenix Offsets Energy for Monday Night Football Game
The University of Phoenix (AZ) has purchased 95,000 kWh of renewable energy certificates to offset 100 percent of the electricity used in the Monday Night Football game between the Arizona Cardinals and the San Francisco 49ers held at University of Phoenix Stadium on November 10, 2008. The University purchased the electricity through the Salt River Project's EarthWise program.

29. U Missouri Bookstore Sells Eco-Friendly Clothing
The University of Missouri Bookstore has begun selling T-shirts and zip-up hooded sweatshirts made by an eco-friendly clothing company. The company’s T-shirts and sweatshirts are made of low-impact organic cotton and produced in facilities in India run solely on wind and solar energy by fair trade workers.

30. U Idaho Bookstore Contributes to Sustainability Fund
The University of Idaho Bookstore will contribute $2,000 to the University of Idaho Sustainability Center (UISC) as part of its annual textbook buy-back event. The Sustainability Center will use the additional funds to support activities that further sustainability initiatives at the institution.

31. Princeton Alumni Climate Effort Receives 100 Endorsers
The Princeton University (NJ) Sustainable Energy Transition has begun the Princeton Alumni Climate Effort. The project aimed to reach, and has attained, 100 endorsers from 30 classes who agree to encourage their alma mater to become a leader in climate change practice. After going live in early October, the Princeton Alumni for Climate Excellence (PACE) campaign has connected with alumni over email, on Facebook, and at alumni events in New York City. The statement signed by over 100 alumni calls on the University to aim for climate neutrality in its campus operations by 2030.

32. Middlebury College to Reduce Energy Use in Prgms Abroad
The Middlebury College (VT) Office of International Programs, Off-Campus Study, and Sustainability Integration have begun a year-long effort to assess the environmental practices of its abroad programs. Students and faculty are working to develop an assessment tool that will help to define what it means to be sustainable and will enable each program to evaluate its own status in regards to the definition. The Directors of each program will meet in the summer of 2009 to evaluate the project and decide how to implement changes at each site.

33. American U, Mount Allison U Voted Most Vegetarian Friendly
American University (DC) and Mount Allison University (NB) have won Peta2's 2008 Most Vegetarian-Friendly College contest. Runners up include the University of Victoria (BC), McMaster University (ON), the University of Western Ontario, the University of Toronto (ON), Wesleyan University (CT), the University of Oregon, Purchase College (NY), University of California, Santa Cruz, Ohio University, the University of Florida, the University of Delaware, the University of Texas, and Georgetown University (DC).

34. Frostburg State U Receives Champion Award for Solar Energy
Frostburg State University (MD) has received the "Champion Award" from the Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Virginia section of the Solar Energy Industries Association. The award recognizes FSU’s success in establishing a renewable energy demonstration and training program and its Wind and Solar Energy Residential Demonstration System, WISE.

35. Cleveland State CC Receives $65,000 Energy Grant
The Cleveland State Community College (TN) Alternative Energy program has received a $65,000 grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission to expand an existing energy efficiency training and education program. Grants totaling $546,000 were awarded to nine winners from six Appalachian states for projects promoting renewable energy production, energy-efficient facilities, and energy-related training and certification programs.

36. York Technical College Converts Kitchen Grease to Biodiesel
York Technical College (ON) has begun producing its own biodiesel fuel to be used in its maintenance and grounds-keeping equipment. The College uses a biodiesel processor to convert vegetable oil into biodiesel for off-road use. The project was made possible by a grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s National Clean Diesel Campaign.

37. Rice University Completes Recycling Competition
Rice University (TX) has completed its November-only inter-college recycling competition. Sid Richardson College came in first place with 54 pounds of collected material, more than twice the amount of runner-up Wiess College. Campus recycling increased by 52 percent during the competition, which was created by a group of students in a course entitled, Environmental Issues: Rice in the Future.

38. Drexel U Increases Campus Recycling
Drexel University (PA) has completed its 2008 Recycling Report. The report found that DU increased its recycling from 21.08 percent to 29.88 percent between 2007 and 2008. The University has attributed the increase to the purchase of new bins that were placed in multiple locations throughout the main campus.

Campus InPower has posted two new resource pages on its website. The Green Fees page contains sample bylaws, a campaign timeline and guide, a volunteer training guide, and sample flyers. 40. Podcast: Understanding What the Sustainability Movement Means
The Chronicle of Higher Education has posted a podcast interview with Debra Rowe, a professor of renewable energy, energy management, and psychology at Oakland Community College (MI). Rowe is also the President of the U.S. Partnership for Education for Sustainable Development.

41. NACUFS List of Trayless Schools
The National Association of College & University Food Service has published a list of NACUFS members who have implanted tray-free policies in their dining halls. The list of 43 colleges and universities includes contact information and the implementation date.

Opportunities

42. MTV Dream it. Do it. Challenge
MTV Switch invites youth ages 12 to 20 to submit a creative idea for improving the environment to its "Dream it. Do it. Challenge." Each participant will be required to submit an action plan showing what activities will be carried out and how the grant will be spent. Grants will be awarded to the most innovative, impactful, sustainable, youth-led, and youth-driven projects. Up to 25 grants will be awarded. Submissions are due December 31, 2008.

43. CFP: Sustainability: The Journal of Record
Sustainability: The Journal of Record is seeking peer-reviewed papers with an action-oriented focus for consideration for publication in 2009 on the following topics: policy shifts or procedural changes either on campus or in the corporate sector that have resulted in an improvement in sustainability; and practical approaches to sustainability challenges and that take a broader view (e.g., methods for greening an entire campus, methods for greening facilities). The Journal is also looking for papers which are likely to have broad applicability to and interest from its readers.

44. Study Abroad Program in China: Environmental Policy & Culture
Northwestern University (IL) invites applications for its Fall 2009 Environmental Policy and Culture study abroad program in Hong Kong and Shanghai, China. Students will learn about China's environmental challenges and its impact on neighboring countries, world resources, and the health of the Chinese population. Courses will include Chinese language; Environment and Culture; Water problems and Pearl River Delta; and Economic Growth and Environmental Policy.

Jobs & Internships

45. Executive Director, AASHE
AASHE invites applications and nominations for an Executive Director. The successful candidate will be responsible for the leadership and management of the organization, including day-to-day operations, fundraising, communications, and programs. The Executive Director will report to the Board of Directors of AASHE, and will work with twelve full time staff plus several part-time staff, contractors, and interns. Desired qualifications include a previous leadership role in a growing, multi-dimensional nonprofit; a proven track record in fundraising and membership development; and a working knowledge of the dynamics of higher education institutions and current trends in sustainability and higher education. Review of applications will begin on January 11, 2009, and will continue until the position is filled.

46. Sustainability Coordinator, Moraine Valley CC
Moraine Valley Community College (IL) seeks a Sustainability Coordinator to develop and coordinate a campus-wide program of environmental stewardship, energy conservation, applied environmental science and policy research, and environmental literacy and community outreach. The Coordinator will be involved in the creation of the new campus sustainability program, under the joint direction of the Vice President of Administrative Services and College Facilities and the Vice President of Academic Affairs. Qualifications include a Bachelor's degree in environmental science, public policy, engineering, sustainable development, education, architecture, institutional planning, or a related field and three years of experience implementing sustainability programs or programs in a related field

47. Dir, Parking, Transportation & Sustainability, Purchase College
Purchase College, part of the State University of New York system, seeks a Director of Parking, Transportation, and Sustainability to oversee the campus transportation program, the campus Zipcar program, and the counter service and overall management of campus parking services. In addition, the Director will be responsible for all sustainable and environmental programs. The position will ultimately oversee three staff members and some student workers and be an integral part in the College community. A Bachelor's degree is required and a Master's degree is preferred. The application deadline is December 31, 2008.

48. Assoc Specialist, Agroecology & Sustainable Food Systems, UCSC
The University of California, Santa Cruz Center for Agroecology and Sustainable Agrifood Systems (CASFS) is accepting applications for an Associate Specialist for Experiential and Lifelong Education. Under the general direction of the CASFS Director, the Associate Specialist will assess the Center’s education programs, expand educational collaborations, and develop proposals for programs that increase our reach and effectiveness, particularly for underserved people. Qualifications include an advanced degree or substantial experience in a relevant field such as education or community development. Applications are due December 24, 2008.

49. 12 Fellows, Env'l Studies, Associated Colleges of the South
The Associated Colleges of the South are announcing the availability of 12 two-year Post-doctoral Fellow Positions in Environmental Studies, with an emphasis on interdisciplinary scholarship in the humanities, social sciences, and sciences, to take place during the 2009 – 2010 and 2010 – 2011 academic years. Positions will feature constructive mentoring, reduced teaching loads, and time for research. Individual recruitment efforts will begin in January 2009.

The University of the South (TN) invites applications for a tenure-track position in Environmental Policy. Applicants should have a Ph.D. in economics, political science, public administration, environmental studies, or an environmentally-associated discipline with a strong social science foundation. He or she will offer courses in social science and interdisciplinary environmental studies that will complement other offerings on campus. 51. Post-Doctoral Scholar, Env'l Studies, U Nevada Las Vegas
The University of Nevada, Las Vegas Department of Environmental Studies seeks a Post-Doctoral research associate to participate in the Policy and Outreach and Education Components of a state-wide, multi-university, National Science Foundation-funded climate change infrastructure project. Primary responsibility will be to develop climate policy and outreach and research and activities, geovisual and scenario applications, and curriculum development, with an expectation of collaborating on related academic publications. The Post- Doctoral position begins in August of 2009 and is available for 3 years. The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. in an interdisciplinary field such as environmental policy and management, geography, or anthropology. The review of materials will begin March 28, 2009 and will continue until the position is filled.

52. Asst Prof, Sustainable Sciences, U Hawaii Maui CC
The University of Hawaii Maui Community College invites applications for a non-tenure track Assistant Professor of Sustainable Sciences to begin in January of 2009. The successful applicant will be responsible for developing a new program in Sustainable Sciences focusing on alternative energy applications and solutions. This will include teaching lower division and upper division courses in multiple areas of Energy, Environmental Sciences, Natural Resource and Environmental Management, Natural Science, and/or Engineering. An earned doctorate in Engineering, Natural Science, Natural Resources and Environmental Management or related field from an accredited institution is required. 53. Asst Prof, Env'l Policy & Planning, Alaska Pacific U
Alaska Pacific University is accepting applications for the position of Assistant Professor in Environmental Policy and Planning in the Environmental Science Department. The successful candidate will assume primary responsibility for the Department's Environmental Studies Major, including the Sophomore Seminar: Introduction to Environmental Studies. Qualifications include a Doctorate in environmental policy and planning or a related area, record of successful college teaching experience, and the ability to work collegially in a small University setting. The Environmental Science and Management Programs at Portland State University (OR) invites applications for a 9-month tenure-track Assistant Professor position. 60. CFP: 2009 Academy of Management Annual Meeting

The Academy of Management invites proposal submissions for its annual meeting. The theme, "Green Management Matters," is meant to encourage attendees to consider how ongoing scholarly activities might shape and be shaped by society's increasing concern about responsible stewardship of the natural environment. Sessions that encourage new thoughts and behaviors are encouraged. Suggested topics include: Sharing of best practices for greening university operations; discussions of international differences in green government policies and management practices; alternative approaches to greening the undergraduate, MBA, PhD, and executive curricula; descriptions and demonstrations of green management teaching resources; and research and theory on effective approaches to changing green behaviors. The deadline for submissions is January 15, 2009.

61. CFP: Summit on Social Justice & Service Learning in the Curriculum
June 11-12, 2009; Ithaca College; Ithaca, NY
Pennsylvania Campus Compact and New York Campus Compact, with support from Learn & Serve America and Ithaca College, invite proposals for its upcoming event called Developing a Good Heart in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM): The First Summit on Incorporating Social Justice and Service-Learning into the STEM Curriculum. Abstracts for short presentations are invited that demonstrate how service-learning projects are promoted and/or how social justice issues are incorporated into a STEM classroom. Topics may include, but are not limited to, theoretical assumptions, community-based research projects, model service-learning programs or curriculum, and/or pedagogical strategies. Proposals are due February 1, 2009. Early bird registration ends April 30, 2009 and regular registration ends May 20, 2009.

62. Transportation Demand Management Toolkit Conference

Academic Impressions invites participants to its conference on Transportation Demand Management. Conference participants will develop a toolkit for managing traffic demand on their campuses through effective planning and implementation of transportation demand management techniques. Topics covered will include accurately assessing parking demand and campus transportation behaviors; alternative transportation and incentive programs; models for planning a pedestrian-friendly campus; tactics for cooperating with municipal agencies and integration with the municipal master plan; and criteria for choosing the most effective programs for an institution. 63. World Conference on Education for Sustainable Development

The World Conference on Education for Sustainable Development, "Moving into the Second Half of the UN Decade," is being organized by the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, in cooperation with the German commission for UNESCO. 700 stakeholders from all over the world are expected to attend. Registration is now open.
