Buildings
1. U Victoria Opens Eco-Friendly Building The University of Victoria (BC) has opened its new First Peoples House, which is registered for LEED Gold. The structure contains a green roof to help with stormwater runoff. Excess water runs through a waterfall and into retention ponds surrounded by native landscaping.
2. Palm Beach Atlantic U Unveils Green Wall Palm Beach Atlantic University (FL) has unveiled a portable green wall that can be used indoors or outdoors. The vertical garden system can be planted with various types of plants and contains a built-in irrigation system. The irrigation can be set through a timer, and the plants can be replaced at any time. Campus Sustainability in the Media
3. Sustainable Industries Magazine Covers Campus Sustainability Sustainable Industries Magazine has published an article titled "Campus Sustainability: progress and prognosis" by Paul Rowland, AASHE's Executive Director. In the article, Rowland discusses the trends of campus sustainability and the ways the movement has progressed over the past few years. Co-Curricular Education
4. Mills College Approves On-Campus Organic Farm Mills College (CA) has approved the creation of an on-campus organic farm. The plots will contain fruits and vegetables. The group managing the garden hopes to sell produce to the College's food service company. Future plans for the project include more on-campus work-study for students, the addition of a new course on sustainable horticulture and food production, and a possible farmers' market stand.
5. George Mason U to Start Organic Garden George Mason University (VA) has broken ground on a new campus produce garden. The community garden will provide produce for the campus community and local food banks, as well as create a place for students to learn and practice sustainable gardening. FCRP, a partnership of nonprofit environmental groups, county agencies, businesses and individual citizens, has assisted Mason’s Office of Sustainability in securing funding and resources necessary for the garden project to take shape.
6. St. Mary's College Announces New, Larger Campus Garden St. Mary's College of Maryland has created a new, larger campus garden. The garden is meant to teach College and community members about sustainable agriculture while producing local, organic, and nutritious food. The group that manages the garden, the Community Garden Club, hopes to be able to sell produce to the College's dining services provider. Coordination and Planning
7. California Polytechnic State U to Launch Ctr for Sustainability California Polytechnic State University's College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences’ (CAFES) has announced plans to launch its Center for Sustainability later this month. The new Center will support CAFES and university initiatives in sustainable practices in resource management and agriculture. The Center will facilitate cross-disciplinary collaborations on campus and will assist the Central Coast food and agricultural community by helping professionals make the most of exciting opportunities emerging in their field.
8. Chatham U Receives $750K for Green Efforts Chatham University (PA) has received a $750,000 gift from the Richard King Mellon Foundation toward both the master plan and the University’s search for the dean of its new School of Sustainability and the Environment. The planning process is expected to continue until June 2010, after which the University will present the master plan to the Richland Township Board of Supervisors. Curriculum
9. Boston Architectural College Announces Green MLA
The Boston Architectural College (MA) has announced the addition of a Master of Landscape Architecture Program. The five year professional degree and the School of Landscape Architecture will provide outreach and support to the greater Boston area through research programs that focus on emerging design issues in innovative interdisciplinary projects that enhance neighborhood and community sustainability and develop new knowledge that prepares the next generation of design professionals.
10. Furman U Announces Grad Diploma in Corporate Sustainability Furman University (SC) has announced plans to offer a new graduate diploma in corporate sustainability starting this fall. The intensive, five-session course, offered by Furman’s Center for Corporate and Professional Development in cooperation with the David E. Shi Center for Sustainability, will offer a broad overview of sustainability as well as a detailed review of major practices in sustainability. It will also identify the sustainable business strategies that offer the most effective return on investment and demonstrate how sustainability can become an ongoing strategic business practice.
11. U Massachusetts Lowell Announces Environmental Health Program The University of Massachusetts, Lowell has announced plans to offer a new bachelor of science degree in environmental health starting this fall. Students in the program will study the effects of the environment on human health and of human activities on the environment, and ways to address those impacts. The degree program will begin with 10 to 15 students and grow to about 60 over four years, according to the university. It will be open to both first-year students and those transferring from other programs at the university or other institutions. See also: The Boston Globe Story
12. U Vermont Concludes Sustainability Faculty Fellows Program The University of Vermont has culminated the first year of its Sustainability Faculty Fellow program, which supports faculty across a range of disciplines who want to infuse sustainability themes and content into their teaching. Throughout the year, fellows met over two lunches during the fall and participated in an intensive two-day seminar in January. They also exchanged emails and posts on the group's dedicated Blackboard site. The Sustainability Faculty Fellows program grew out of AASHE's Sustainability Across the Curriculum Leadership Workshop. 13. U Kansas Enters $25M Energy Contract The University of Kansas has entered into a $25 million contract with Overland Park energy company to help increase the campus's energy efficiency. KU expects to save nearly $2 million per year by addressing aging heating, ventilation, and air conditioning; by reducing energy and water use; and by educating the campus about responsible stewardship of resources. Work has begun and is scheduled for completion in the summer of 2011.
14. U California San Diego Installs Energy Dashboard The University of California, San Diego has installed an Energy Dashboard that allows users to see up-to-the-second information on a structure-by-structure basis for 60 of the largest buildings on the La Jolla campus. The data is provided by UC San Diego Physical Plant Services from over 200 energy meters providing energy usage at the building level. The portal also features information coming from roughly 40 individual power meters that measure energy consumption in the office, e.g., a computer and monitor drawing power from a single socket. A denser deployment of meters, which would measure and display individuals’ energy use, is currently under planning and development. The Web portal provides statistics updated at least once every minute on total power consumption, power generation, imports from San Diego Gas & Electric, and a comparison between power usage and production. 15. U Kansas Installs 6 Solar Panels The University of Kansas EcoHawks engineering group has installed six solar panels on a campus shed. The group plans to transfer energy captured by the panels into a battery used as a fueling station for their 1974 Volkswagen Super Beetle. See also: List of Campus Solar Installations
16. Louisiana State U Completes Energy Conservation Competition Louisiana State University has completed its second annual UNPLUG energy conservation competition. Students living in on-campus residence halls and apartments at LSU yielded an average 14 percent reduction in energy consumption — an estimated $10,368 in savings — over a one-month time period. Nine residence hall communities, which altogether house 4,800 residents and 135 resident assistants, and three Greek houses participated in the competition. The West Campus Apartments led the Residential Life competition with a 26 percent reduction, and Phi Mu sorority won the Greek division with a 45 percent reduction. See also: Local News Story
17. Syracuse U Posts Lights Out Stickers on Campus Syracuse University (NY) has announced the winner of its "Lights Out" sticker design contest held by SU's Sustainability Division, in partnership with the New York Public Interest Research Group (NYPIRG). The contest called on students to create a wall sticker for display above campus light switches to remind students, faculty and staff to turn off the lights when leaving an unoccupied room for more than 10 minutes. Winner Bill Hoelzer, a philosophy graduate student, designed a sticker that reads, "Steppin' out? Lights out! Help save juice in the 'Cuse." The sticker will be placed in nearly all SU offices and classrooms. Grounds
18. U Pennsylvania Celebrates Tree Campus USA Designation The University of Pennsylvania has been designated a Tree Campus USA by the Arbor Day Foundation. To celebrate, students and community volunteers will plant 45 trees on campus. Policy and Legislation
19. Virginia to Form Universities Clean Energy Developm't Foundation Virginia State Governor Bob McDonnell has signed into law a measure establishing the Universities Clean Energy Development and Economic Stimulus Foundation. The bill signing took place just two days after Virginia was given federal approval to become the first state on the East Coast to explore for and produce oil and natural gas offshore. Through a policy proposal promoted by McDonnell, 20 percent of future revenues received by the state from this offshore energy development will go to green energy research and development at the Virginia Coastal Energy Research Consortium on the Old Dominion University campus. 20. College of St Benedict, St. John's U to Start Bike-Shares The College of St. Benedict (MN) and St. John’s University (MN) have announced plans to launch a bike-share program. St. Ben’s will introduce its Green Bike Initiative on April 23 as part of Earth Week. The program, which is still seeking donations for its fleet, will offer half of its bikes for a semester check-out and the other half will be made available for daily use. 21. U Kentucky Bike-Share Expands Fleet The University of Kentucky Wildcat Wheels bike-share program has expanded its total fleet from 12 to 150 bikes. The program contains four sub-fleets that are designated for certain campus populations. Wildcat Wheels has also begun offering traveling workshops available to residence halls with tutorials on bike maintenance and upkeep. Waste
22. Humboldt State U Holds Clothing Swap Humboldt State University (CA) recently held a Campus Recycling Program Clothing Swap. During the event, students were invited to bring clean and gently used clothing to a designated room on campus where they could swap items with others. Students were not required to bring pieces of their own wardrobe to be able to take home clothes.
23. Lehigh U, Lafayette College Offer Eco-Friendly Graduation Gowns Lehigh University (PA) and Lafayette College (PA) have announced plans to offer environmentally friendly graduation gowns this year. Lehigh University has opted to offer graduation gowns that will be used in the future. After the ceremony, gowns will be cleaned with earth-safe products. Lafayette College's gowns will be made to be worn once and to quickly biodegrade. The gowns are made from acetate fibers made of wood from managed forests and decompose completely within a year of being buried in soil.
24. Pennsylvania State U Installs Pilot Water Refilling Stations Pennsylvania State University has installed four water refilling stations for students and employees in order to research the stations' practicality and whether they reduce the use of bottled water. The stations were donated by three difference companies.

25. List of Campus Green Cleaning Programs and Policies AASHE has published a new resource that lists campus green cleaning policies and programs that exist independently of other campus sustainability plans. The new resource is only available to AASHE members.
Opportunities
26. Ithaca College Online Sustainability Leadership Certificate The Professional Certificate in Sustainability Leadership from Ithaca College, offered in partnership with AASHE, is for practitioners who want to apply best practices in leading sustainability initiatives. The certificate catalog features 12, two-week seminars delivered online - anytime, anywhere - with open enrollment. The upcoming seminar, The Sustainability Coordinator as an Organizational Change Agent, will be held April 14 - 27, 2010, and will cover proficiency in the use of facilitation, persuasive communication, and collaboration that will be used to guide and motivate an organization to adopt sustainable business processes. Another upcoming seminar, Designing Effective Communication Media, will also be held April 14 - 27, 2010, and will give participants an understanding of how to engage an audience and enhance comprehension of messaging through graphic design and clear, crisp persuasive writing. The registration deadline for both seminars is April 14, 2010 and discounts are available for AASHE members.
27. Farmward Bound: Preparation for Farm Operation Leadership The University of Vermont invites participants to its summer Farmward Bound Program, which features a two week farm-based residential experience in which students have the opportunity live and learn from successful local farmers. Students will gain an understanding of multiple approaches to contemporary small scale sustainable agriculture. Plant and soil science courses in entomology, plant pathology, weed ecology, tree fruit production, and introduction to ecological agriculture will provide students with in-depth content and hands-on field activities including farm/site visits and assessments.
28. 2 Week Course: Deep Ecology & Sustainable Living, Costa Rica Humboldt State University (CA) and the University of San Jose (CA) are offering a two week course, from July 25 - August 7, 2009, entitled, "Deep Ecology & Sustainable Living." The course will consist of an investigation of personal and collective relationships with the Earth through an exploration of the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual aspects of humans as a part of nature. In particular, discussions, field activities, and individual and group exercises will address the concepts of self-awareness, eco-psychology, ritual and ceremony, voluntary simplicity, and spirituality. Students will explore avenues for improved integration of sustainable living practices into their daily lives. Participants can receive three units of academic credit at the undergraduate or graduate level. Applications will be accepted until April 23, 2010, or until the class is full.

29. Environmental Sustainability Director, Smith College Smith College (MA) seeks an environmental sustainability director. Reporting to the vice president for finance and administration, the director will be responsible for actively promoting and facilitating sustainability activities across campus, collaborating with students, staff, faculty, and relevant committees and communicating regularly with members of the campus community. Working with campus stakeholders, the successful candidate will coordinate and advocate for Smith's integration of sustainable principles and practices into campus operations and procedures. S/he will also promote, track, and report progress on implementation of the College's sustainability plan. A bachelor's degree and five years of experience relevant to the position is required. 30. Sustainability Coordinator, American U The American University (DC) Office of Sustainability is seeking a sustainability coordinator who acts as a facilitator for sustainability initiatives on campus and will provide the leadership, community organizing, administrative support, and coordination appropriate to develop, maintain, and enhance environmental stewardship, sustainability efforts, and culture within the campus community and among its constituencies. This position requires extensive collaboration with students, faculty, and staff and the ability to establish connections and partnerships around a variety of projects. This position requires use of database, spreadsheet, and presentation software and the facilitation of presentations. A bachelor's degree in Environmental Studies or a related area or significant related training and work experience is required. A master's degree is preferred. The position is open until filled.
31. Sustainability Specialist, Waubonsee CC Waubonsee Community College (IL) seeks a sustainability specialist to serve as the liaison to the Illinois Community College Sustainability Network; coordinate Sustainability Work Group meetings; facilitate meetings with instruction, operations, and workforce development on the topic of sustainability. S/he will also establish plans for a sustainability center and help design new curriculum for courses and workshops about sustainability. A bachelor's degree in environmental studies, environmental science, sustainability, or a related field is required, as is two years of experience working with environmental issues. Applications are due April 22, 2010.
32. Energy Manager, Chapman U Chapman University (CA) seeks an energy manager to manage campus sustainability and energy management programs. Reporting to the director of facilities management, the successful candidate will identify, recommend, and manage various sustainability and energy savings projects and strategies; assure that all energy and conservation rebates and other incentives are claimed and received; research and propose alternate energy sources for campus utilities; and work with CU students, faculty, and staff to educate and motivate in areas of sustainability. Qualifications include a bachelor's degree in a related technical, scientific, environmental, or engineering discipline or equivalent combination of education and experience; five years of hands on experience in implementing analogous programs; and experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
33. Energy Management Supervisor, U North Texas The University of North Texas invites applications for its energy management supervisor position. The energy management supervisor will be responsible for the 24 hour/365 day operation of the computerized energy management system which includes hardware maintenance, software programming for the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) for over three million square feet in 49 maintenance buildings. Some of the primary responsibilities will include: the supervision of the university's energy savings Performance Contract implementation, vendor interface, equipment selection, training of UNT personnel, and technical problem solving. The successful candidate will also maintain an energy conservation program on an ongoing basis and provide support to campus sustainability initiatives. Minimum qualifications include a high school diploma/GED equivalent and five years of experience in a related maintenance/repair field. The position is open until filled.
34. Assoc Dean, Sustainable Energies Career Prgms, Black Hawk College Black Hawk College seeks an associate dean to plan, implement, and evaluate programs and curricula that will achieve student learning outcomes. The associate dean has the responsibility for the development, implementation, administration, and maintenance of sustainable energies career programs and monitors and coordinates the program accountability. S/he will also develop and maintain partnerships and relationships with industries, community organizations, and educational institutions. A master's degree is required, as is five years of college-level teaching experience. The deadline to apply for this position is April 21, 2010.
35. Manager, Sustainable Prisons Project, Evergreen State College Evergreen State College (WA) seeks applicants for its sustainable prisons project manager position. The manager will develop, expand, and evaluate initiatives that promote the sustainability of corrections facilities that will, in turn, improve offender behavior, reduce recidivism, enhance career possibilities for inmates in Washington State, and increase educational opportunities for students and faculty at the College. Closing date for the position is April 26, 2010.
36. Manager, Center for Environmental Excellence, U Texas Arlington The University of Texas at Arlington seeks a manager for its Center for Environmental Excellence. The successful candidate will perform functions associated with servicing environmental grants and contracts; schedule and coordinate the activities of staff; supervise support staff and students; manage processes associated with the financial and quality assurance aspects of the environmental grants and contracts; and develop and manage relationships with affiliate organizations. A bachelor's degree, two years of management/supervisory experience, and three years of experience in the field of environmental regulatory enforcement are required. 37. Program Coordinator, Env'l Sciences, U California Santa Cruz The University of California Santa Cruz seeks a program coordinator for its Inquiry-Based Learning in Environmental Sciences Program. The successful candidate will oversee and perform the full range of daily administrative and support activities for the GK-12 Graduate Training Program including creation of promotional materials, website and database support and updates, meeting planning and logistics, and communication aspects between the program directors, parents, and schools. Instructor, Sustainable Energy Technology, Montana State U Montana State University-Northern College of Technical Sciences is seeking a progressive, innovative, high-energy, dedicated professional to serve as the sustainable energy technology instructor. S/he will develop and teach courses in a program leading to a degree in sustainable energy. Topics will include power generation using wind, photovoltaic, fuel cell, or other forms of sustainable energy. Specific courses include electronics, electrical, and mechanical system fundamentals, troubleshooting, and repair. A bachelor's degree in engineering, industrial technology, or energy production related fields or the equivalent industrial experience is required. Asst Professor, General & Environmental Science, Peirce College Peirce College (PA) invites applications for a nine-month assistant professor position to teach undergraduate courses in general and environmental science. Webinar: Sustainability and Student Learning Outcomes April 14, 2010; 2 - 3pm Eastern; Online StudentVoice, the Sustainability Task Force, and Commission on Assessment Evaluation have partnered to plan a webinar on assessing student learning outcomes around sustainability. "Sustainability and Student Learning Outcomes: Linking Green Efforts with Assessment" will look at how to tie sustainability and assessment efforts together. The sessions will focus on creating learning outcomes around sustainability issues as well as assessment tools to help participants assess those outcomes. Registration is open to all ACPA and StudentVoice member institutions.
41. STEM Conference October 31 - November 3, 2010; Orlando, FL The League for Innovation in the Community College is accepting proposals to present at the first annual STEMtech conference. The event will feature tracks focused on STEM disciplines — science, technology, engineering, mathematics — in general education and workforce training. One track will focus on Energy, Environment, and Sustainability: Innovations in energy, environment, and sustainability and green disciplines, and their related workforce training and career pathways, as well as institutional efforts toward energy efficiency, environmental stewardship, and environmental sustainability. Other tracks will include: Health and Science; Mathematics, Engineering, and Architecture; Manufacturing, Industry, and Agriculture; and Technology, Multimedia, and Communication. The deadline to submit proposals is April 16, 2010.
42. Webinar: Sustaining Sustainability with Alumni Support April 20, 2010; 2pm Eastern; Online Clean Air-Cool Planet will host "Sustaining Sustainability with Alumni Support." The webinar will feature the story of three schools that have successfully included alumni in on-campus sustainability efforts. Speakers will include Dano Weisbord, the environmental sustainability director at Smith College (MA); Thom Wallace, founder of Alumni for a Sustainable Dickinson College (PA); and Rob Constantine, vice president for college advancement at Unity College (ME).
43. 2010 Chill Out Webcast April 21, 2010; Online The National Wildlife Federation will feature the winners of this year's Chill Out: Campus Solutions to Global Warming competition, a competition showcasing campus-based climate action, with a free webcast that can be shown on campus. The webcast will be 30 minutes long and will feature students, faculty, and staff making a difference on campus. The time the webcast is shown is flexible; it will be available by 9am Eastern on April 21st.
44. National Sustainable Design Expo and P3 Award Competition April 24 - 25, 2010; Washington, DC The National Sustainable Design Expo, held in the spring each year on the National Mall in Washington, DC, was created to bring together professional scientists, engineers, and business leaders around innovations designed to advance economic growth while reducing environmental impact. The Expo showcases novel, commercially available products for green buildings and construction materials, innovative renewable energy technologies, strategies for rainwater collection and purification, and the latest in consumer products. In conjunction with the Expo, The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency hosts the Annual P3 (People, Prosperity, and the Planet) Award competition. This national competition enables college students to research, develop, and design scientific, technical, and policy solutions to sustainability challenges. The event is open to the general public.
45. Collegiate Schools of Business Sustainability Conference June 14 - 16, 2010; Denver, CO The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB International) invites participants to its Sustainability Conference. Attendees will explore case studies and best practices of sustainable curriculum innovations and student engagement, hear examples of metrics for tracking sustainability, visit real-world corporate examples of the "triple bottom line"—business solutions that benefit people, planet, and profit; learn about the role of business education in addressing ethics and governance issues; and learn what goes into building a successful sustainability program. Early bird registration ends May 3, 2010.
46. Assessing & Financing Renewable Energy Options Webcast May 5, 2010; 1 - 2:40pm Eastern; Online Academic Impressions will host "Assessing and Financing Renewable Energy Options," a webcast for colleges considering their first investment (or a new investment) in renewable energy generation. Participants will review what's changing in the cost effectiveness of renewable energy options, what campuses will need to investigate in order to determine feasibility, and where to look for funding renewable energy projects. Instructors include Ryan Pletka, director of renewables strategy and planning services for Black & Veatch, and Douglas R. Friedel, project director of consulting and design for energy intensive industries and power generation services projects for Black & Veatch.
47. Save the Date - AASHE 2010 October 10 - 12, 2010; Denver, CO AASHE will host its annual conference this October. This year, the conference will feature presentations, an expo, and keynote speaker Julian Agyeman, a Tufts University (MA) Professor and Fellow of the UK Royal Society of the Arts. Special events will include an AASHE Awards program, Curriculum Convocation, member meeting, Sustainability Officers Workshop, and Student Summit. The Call for Presentations will be announced soon.
48. World Sustainable Development Teach-In Day December 3, 2010; Global The World Sustainable Development Teach-In Day entitled "Sustainable Development: working toward local solutions to a global challenge" will give university lecturers and their students the chance to examine some key sustainability-related issues. The goal of the teach-in is to disseminate information on the concept, aims, and purposes of sustainable development so that it can be understood by a broad public, and will include elements relating to its environmental, social, economic, and policy aspects, and to raise awareness among university students on the complexity of matters related to sustainable development and the need for personal engagement and action. Participating university staff/lecturers and teachers will be encouraged to get their students involved in working through a set of five guiding questions that are pertinent to their discipline. They will be supplied with a list of suggested questions in advance and encouraged to hand them out to their students in order to prepare for the discussions and provide them with guidance.
