This is the Website for the Energy Challenge we have at Western Washington University during the winter quarter. 2008 was our first year, and in 2009 we are expanding the challenge to include water and waste reduction. Thanks for adding our Website to the list.

Patrick Ye, a member of Duke's Environmental Alliance, found a clever way to incorporate the Eco-Olympics into the canon of official Dukedom. Duke has a school Wiki, called 'Duke Wiki.' Patrick created in the wiki all about the Eco-Olympics: https://wiki.duke.edu/display/envalliance/Eco-Olympics

Good question, Josh. The idea was to make the videos large enough that they could be played for multiple people at once (for example, at a group meeting) by pulling the site up on a laptop or on a projector. Perhaps it wasn't the best idea, but that was the idea behind making them (and the site) so large.

If you want to view them smaller, one thing you can do is right-click on the video while it is playing and zoom it to 50% size. You can also download the video files and convert them to any size you want.

Hope that helps!

Oberlin has an amazing energy measurement system that gives instantaneous feedback to students throughout the year. (You can check it out here: http://www.oberlin.edu/dormenergy/) I think it solves a lot of the problems mentioned in this video. It would be cool if more schools had a ssytem like Oberlin's.

Something to keep in mind is that Duke (and many schools in the South) pay extremely low rates for electricity (eg 5 cents per kWh). If Duke paid rates similar to schools in the northeast (eg 11 cents per kWh), the savings would be double!

Bullfrog Films is a great place to find environmental films, especially hard-to-find ones. You can rent from Bullfrog or ask your library to buy the film from them. I believe that they have a discount for student groups.
