The Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education is pleased to invite you to its inaugural conference: AASHE 2006: The Role of Higher Education in Creating a Sustainable World.

Audience

The conference welcomes individuals from every sector of higher education as well as interested businesses and NGO's. Participants will include administrators, faculty, students, sustainability professionals, facilities officers, operations staff, consultants, vendors, government, community leaders, and anyone concerned about the role of higher education in creating a sustainable world. Over 500 attendees are expected.

Conference Goals

  • Significantly advance sustainability in higher education, with an emphasis on “next steps” and beyond the low-hanging fruit.
  • Highlight the social dimension of sustainability and the need to consider all components of sustainability - not just the environment – in decision-making.
  • Provide for active exchange of ideas and knowledge through interactive forums, informal networking, and open discussion.
  • Foster cross-sector collaborations and build a learning community that includes all stakeholders.

Keynote Speakers

  • Ray Anderson - Chairman and founder of Interface, Inc.
  • Beverly Wright - founder of the Deep South Center for Environmental Justice.
  • Hunter Lovins - President and founder of Natural Capitalism, Inc., and co-founder of the Rocky Mountain Institute.
  • Bill McKibben - author and scholar whose books include The End of Nature and Hope, Human and Wild.

Special Features of the Conference

AASHE 2006 will have many special features and events, including the following:

  • Plenary sessions on food and dining issues, energy and global warming, and curriculum change.

  • Outcomes-oriented roundtables on developing a standard assessment system for campus sustainability, incorporating and measuring the social equity aspects of sustainability, and other issues of importance to the campus sustainability community.

  • An outdoor expo in conjunction with ASU Suppliers Showcase (which has adopted a sustainability theme).

  • An awards dinner featuring AASHE campus achievement awards, certificates of recognition, and other honors.

  • Meetings and receptions for the Higher Education Associations Sustainability Consortium (HEASC), Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges (COPLAC), sustainability coordinators, regional consortia, and other groups.

  • Free copy for every registrant of "The Business Case for Renewable Energy: A Guide for Colleges and Universities," by Andrea Putman and Michael Phillips (compliments of Society for College and University Planning).

  • Pre-conference workshops on campus planning (SCUP) and green building (USGBC).

  • Post-conference Student Convergence

  • Donation of carbon offsets for all conference-related greenhouse gas emissions.

  • A "green" and socially responsible conference. (Attendees are encouraged to bring a mug and their collections of badge holders and conference bags for reuse at the conference.)

Host Campus

The conference will be hosted by Arizona State University on its Tempe campus. The President’s Office is working closely with AASHE to ensure the success of this event.

The Tempe campus comprises more than 700 acres and offers outstanding physical facilities to support the university's educational programs. The campus is characterized by broad pedestrian malls laid out in an easy-to-follow grid plan, spacious lawns, and subtropical landscaping.
